Whether you are from the area or an aspiring traveler passing through town, the city of Hoover has something for everyone. One of Hoover’s most popular attractions is Moss Rock Preserve, a nature preserve right in the middle of Hoover.
Moss Rock preserves 349 acres of abundant forestation, large cliff-like rocks, wildlife, and waterfalls. In addition, Moss Rock also protects six rare species of plants and a rare Little River Canyon Sandstone Glade that is one of 35 like it in the entire world. All of these natural wonders can be seen on the 12 miles of trails at the Preserve.
Boulder Field & Hiking
Climbers of all skill levels from novice to pro will love scaling the many technical formations and climbing routes in Boulder Field. The 12 miles of trails at Moss Rock include single-track, old roads, drains, and utility easements. Many of the trails were first built by volunteers and are maintained by a team of Hoover City staff and volunteers.
There are three main trail color codes: white, blue, red, and orange. White trails are generally the easiest, offering scenic routes along a stream, though the eastern end of the trail includes some more difficult topography. In fact, this eastern end is affectionately called the “cardio trail” by Moss Rock regulars! The orange trail is the newest and takes you along some of the most beautiful areas of the park.
Grab a Bite to Eat
Right outside of the Preserve you’ll find dynamic shopping and delicious restaurants where you can sit back and relax after your hike. If you’re in the mood for Mexican cuisine, Moss Rock Tacos is a local favorite while Vecchia Pizzeria has some of the best pizza and pasta in town!
Volunteering
Local conservation groups play a big part in ensuring that Moss Rock maintains its beauty and wonder for generations to come.
