Amazing Exhibits

The McWane Science Center offers a wide variety of exhibits and displays, from tremendous dinosaur skeletons to the Itty Bitty Magic City programs and hands-on learning within the Explore! Collections. Let your family discover their love for earth sciences as they learn about rocks, butterflies, and more in these interactive attractions, and watch as their eyes light up when they discover that Alabama was once home to its own T. rex relative, the 22-foot-long Appalachiosaurus.

Under the Sea

The Science Center is home to some colorful sea creatures, and your family can see them all at the World of Water Aquariums. These blue spaces feature familiar sea life like clownfish, moon jellyfish, and the green Moray eel. You can also visit the Shark and Ray Tank to see Southern rays, bamboo sharks, and the curious epaulette shark with its distinctive eye-like spots.

The IMAX Theater

When you visit the McWane Science Center, you can enjoy a truly unique film experience in the John W. Woods IMAX Dome Theater. Inside this distinctive auditorium, a massive tilted dome screen displays crystal-clear images from a state-of-the-art laser projection system. The tremendous screen, incredible picture quality, and astounding audio all work together for a truly transportive and immersive screening, and the theater shows a changing marquee of enlightening, entertaining films that take you around the world for wonder, natural beauty, and adventure.

Planning Your Trip

The McWane Science Center is located downtown at 200 19th Street North, Birmingham, Alabama 35203. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday, with some exceptions for holidays. The science center opens at 9 a.m. on weekdays, at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, and at noon on Sundays. They close at 5 p.m. each day.
