Uber in Birmingham: What’s the Deal?

Birmingham has been hearing rumors of Uber car service coming to town for a long time now. But will it ever actually happen? And what exactly is Uber?

Uber is a transportation service that works kind of like a cab service. However, instead of calling and waiting around for a cab, clients can hail the closest Uber driver from an easy-to-use smart phone app. The app will show you where the closest driver is in real time so you can know exactly when you can expect them to pick you up. Not only is hailing a ride super easy, but so is paying for it. The Uber app allows users to pay for the ride directly from their smart phone. Users can even split the ride costs between different riders to make things even easier.

In 2014 there were many attempts to have Uber come to Birmingham, but all of the efforts were shut down. Birmingham taxi drivers and taxi unions are vehemently against Uber’s arrival in the Magic City, and they are responsible for keeping Uber out of town in the past year. However, despite resistance from cab companies and their unions, Birmingham Mayor William Bell says that he hopes to see Uber arrive in Birmingham by the end of 2015. Whether that actually happens or not is up in the air, but Uber will undoubtedly be here soon it seems. This is great news for everybody who relies on public transportation to go to work, run errands, or even after a night of drinks. Uber is quicker and simpler than waiting around for a cab company not knowing when your car will actually arrive.

Uber is now operating in 45 different countries around the world. Having Uber come to Birmingham seems inevitable and valuable. Having Uber in town will also open up doors for driving jobs as well. People looking for work can apply to drive for Uber to earn extra income. Despite the initial resistance in 2014, it seems unavoidable that Uber will be here before we know it.
