Searching for a compact crossover SUV makes logical sense for Birmingham drivers who want the versatility of an SUV without using an excessive amount of fuel or worrying about handling. Every automaker seems to offer a model in this category, including the Toyota RAV4 and the Hyundai Tucson. While each of these has plenty to offer Alabama drivers, you will typically be better off with the Toyota.
Fuel Economy and Engines
Both the RAV4 and the Tucson offer the choice of two engines. Regular Toyota RAV4s run on a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 176 horsepower and delivers 23 city/30 highway mpg*. The base Tucson only increases this slightly to 23/31* but takes a hit in terms of engine output, giving you just 164 horses. In fact, if you want to get close to the RAV4’s standard engine for power with the Tucson, you would have to upgrade to the 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder, which still only gets 175 horsepower. It does increase fuel economy to 26/33*.
Thanks to the new RAV4 Hybrid, you can get the most power and the most fuel economy out of either of these compact SUVs. The hybrid gets 34 mpg* in the city and 31 mpg* on the highway, along with 194 horsepower. The Toyota RAV4 takes a clear lead for both engine output and fuel economy.
Interior Versatility
Any review will tell you that the Toyota RAV4 is more spacious and versatile than the Tucson, giving it a huge advantage. In fact, its cargo area is about 10 cubic feet larger than that of the Tucson, increasing the possibilities of how you can use your SUV.
