Make 2021 Your Best Year Yet

Woman lists goals for the New YearIt’s time to put 2020 in your rearview mirror and start looking forward to making 2021 the best year yet. With inspiration from The Latch, we put together a gameplan for a successful new year and we wanted to share it with you!

Fewer Assumptions = More Hope

It’s easy to assume a scenario will play out the same way we planned it in our heads. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. When you view life with hopeful optimism and stop assuming outcomes, growth opportunities begin to present themselves.

Adjust Expectations

It’s important to let go of how you think things should be and instead focus on the reality of the situation. Be flexible and adjust your plans to respond to your new reality.

What Can You Control?

Shifting your focus toward acceptance and away from control will make you a much happier person. If you feel anxious in a situation, slow down and ask yourself, is the outcome something I can control? If not, let it go. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we don’t always have a choice in the matter.

Goal Setting

New Year’s resolutions rarely stick because they either aren’t specific enough or they are too ambitious. Dr. Jo Lukins, a performance psychologist, suggests setting two types of goals: “Achievable” and “Desirable”. “Achievable” goals can be accomplished regardless of the things going on in the world and “Desirable” goals are contingent and require flexibility.

Online classes, house renovation projects, and creative endeavors are examples of “Achievable.” Running a marathon, traveling to another country, and organizing an in-person conference are all considered to be “Desirable” goals. Create a list with a combination of the two; be disciplined when working toward the goals on your “Achievable” list, and be flexible with how you deal with “Desirable” goals.
