There’s a wealth of public art to be found throughout the city of Birmingham. That includes one of the finest museums in the South. In fact, if you want to enjoy a day at the Birmingham Museum of Art, you’ll probably find that just one day is simply not nearly enough. Founded in 1951, the 180,000-square-foot museum features more than 27,000 paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and decorative arts dating from ancient to modern times.
This massive collection includes Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American art. In addition, there are exhibitions that come through regularly. Expanding Darshan
This exhibition combines the work of Manjari Sharma, a global contemporary artist, with part of the museum’s permanent collection. It introduces nine significant deities of the Hindu pantheon and their contemporary relevance in art and faith, serving as a gateway to the concept of darshan—seeing and being seen by the divine. You can visit Expanding Darshan from now until January 15, 2023.
Ways Of Seeing: Sports And Games
Drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, this exhibit shows the influence of sports and games on art. It communicates the importance of sports to societies around the world. Ways Of Seeing will be on display through May 21, 2023.
Light Play
More than 30 works from a variety of artists who explore the manipulations, effects, and emotions of light are featured in this exhibition, including some that are presented humorously. Go take a look between now and January 29, 2023.
Wall To Wall: Rico Gatson
This exhibit features colorful work by Brooklyn-based artist Rico Gatson in the lobby of the museum. It can be seen through July 2023.
