Toyota’s Project BLAID: Mobility Device for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Toyota BLAID Project Alabama

Toyota has always been ahead of the curb when it comes to technology, and now they are using that drive to create something great, called Project BLAID. Project BLAID takes Toyota’s affinity for mobility technology and uses it to create a wearable device for the blind and visually impaired to help them get around with ease and confidence. Let’s see what Project BLAID has to offer.

Project BLAID Features

The wearable device will help fill the gaps left by canes, guide dogs, and basic GPS devices by providing users with better information about their surroundings. The device is worn around the shoulders and it helps users navigate indoor spaces, such as office buildings and shopping malls. The device helps to identify features such as restrooms, escalators, stairs, and doors. The device uses cameras to detect the user’s surroundings. The device communicates with the wearer by means of vibrations and speakers, and the wearer can communicate with the device via voice recognition software.

Project Mission

Toyota’s Project BLAID shows us that mobility is not just about cars, and that independence should be attainable for everybody. Toyota hoes that this device will help the visually impaired achieve better mobility and freedom.

More on the Project

In order to make Project BLAID even more useful, Toyota has implemented a campaign for employees to send in videos of commonplace indoor landmarks. These videos can help teach Project BLAID to better recognize facilities and help the visually impaired get around even better. To witness this technology in action, visit Toyota Diversity & Inclusion and see for yourself. This remarkable technology is only the beginning of the advanced technology that Toyota has to offer.

Stay tuned for upcoming information on Project BLAID. This technology is going to be a game changer and a life changer. Here at Limbaugh Toyota, we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
