With a new year, we all strive to set goals, start new habits, and improve ourselves. You start out strong in January, but once the end of February rolls around, it’s hard to stick to your New Year’s resolutions. If you want to set goals you can both keep and conquer, use these tips and tricks to be successful in 2022.

SMART Goals

When you set goals, make sure they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.

  • Specific: When you set your goal, be sure to be specific. Answer the questions who, what, where, which, and when. For example, don’t say you want to start waking up earlier. Set your goal to go to bed by 10:00 p.m. each night so you can wake up rested by 8:00 a.m.
  • Measurable: If you want to stay on track, it has to be a goal you can measure and keep track of. For example, if one of your goals is to run a half marathon, you can keep track of your progress and mileage each day, but if you want to start jogging, you cannot measure your success because there is not a specific goal to measure.
  • Attainable: Don’t sell yourself short. Set yourself up for success with achievable goals. Be realistic!
  • Realistic: Based on your current lifestyle or circumstances, is your goal going to be attainable? For example, if you want to travel, don’t pick 12 countries you want to visit this year if you have a full-time career. Look into your paid time off, check your budget, and pick out one or two countries to visit in 2022.
  • Timely: You want to get to the end of 2022 finish line with a complete goal, so make sure it can be completed within 365 days.

Start Positive

If someone asks you what your goals are for the year, don’t casually speak of them or talk down on yourself. Instead, speak highly of it. For example, don’t say “I need to stop sitting around and move my body this year.” Instead, state “I would like to run one mile three times a week during 2022.”
