Incredible Animals
At the Birmingham Zoo, you’ll find some animals you’d expect to see and more than a few surprises. For example, many animals are native to the Southeast but are no less impressive for being “neighbors.” But you’ll also see sea lions from the West Coast and African elephants. In fact, there are species from six different continents at the Birmingham Zoo. In total, you’ll see more than 500 animals if you go through the entire zoo.
Conservation is Crucial
Conservation is a cornerstone of the Birmingham Zoo. Staff and leadership have launched several initiatives. These include keeping the zoo clean and green and creating an innovative elephant care program. Another unique feature of the zoo is the all-male African Savannah Elephant herd. This herd is the only all-male herd in the country, meaning that there are study opportunities at the Birmingham Zoo that can’t be found at any other zoo. Because studying male elephants in the wild is so challenging, an entire herd of them is crucial to better understanding elephant dynamics.
