The Environmental Protection Agency has named Toyota an Energy Star Partner of the Year for the 11th year in a row. Huntsville’s own Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s major contributions to environmental sustainability helped achieve this honor. TMMAL produces several V6, V8 and 4-cylinder engines that are used in a variety of Toyota models sold across the country, including Limbaugh Toyota in Birmingham.
Toyota has won the Energy Star award, the EPA’s highest level of recognition, more than any other automaker. Since 2002, Toyota’s conservation efforts have saved nearly $600 million, reduced 14 billion kilowatt-hours of energy, and cut CO2 emissions by 40% per vehicle. Toyota strives to maintain its reputation for quality and value while simultaneously acting responsibly toward the Earth. Robin Haugen, general manager of Toyota’s plant and environmental group, commented, “While there’s always room for improvement, achieving energy efficiency demonstrates that good ideas have helped us become environmentally responsible while making a significant impact to our bottom line.”
The following are some of the contributions made by the Huntsville plant:
- By reusing compressor condensate water in the cooling tower (which accounts for almost 50% of the facility’s water use), TMMAL has saved 300,000 gallons of water a year. In two years, the water saved could fill an Olympic-size pool.
- TMMAL switched to higher-efficiency motors, and thus used compressed air more efficiently.
- Installing LED lighting, solar lights, and daylighting allowed TMMAL to reduce purchased electricity.
- Environmental projects funded by a $1 million dollar investment to make the plant more sustainable have resulted in annual savings of more than 3.3 kilowatt-hours, equal to 125 average U.S. homes, and reducing more than 2,000 metric tons of CO2.
Toyota celebrates Earth Day 365 days a year. Limbaugh Toyota in Birmingham, Alabama is proud to be part of such a green-minded company.
